The seven start-ups that have recently joined the DTC Health program represent a spectrum of innovative approaches to healthcare:

UKind XR: This company is developing trauma-informed Virtual Reality (VR) and AI-powered support systems designed to provide immediate assistance during the often anxious and lengthy waiting periods before therapy commences. Created by an individual with lived experience and grounded in robust evidence, UKind XR aims to equip employers, healthcare providers, and frontline services with a tool that offers confidential emotional support, circumventing the common barriers of waiting lists and societal stigma.

Eyetech Innovations: Eyetech Innovations is pioneering a portable device capable of precisely measuring eye movement excursions. This technology holds significant potential to empower clinicians in the assessment and diagnosis of a wide array of neurological and ophthalmic conditions, offering a non-invasive and accessible diagnostic aid.

HMA Technologies: HMA Technologies is focused on the development of a wearable robotic arm support system. This innovative device is designed to enable stroke survivors to independently perform intensive rehabilitation exercises in the comfort of their own homes, thereby extending the reach of recovery support beyond traditional clinical settings and promoting continuous progress.

Beyond Blood: This start-up is developing a revolutionary portable blood-testing technology. By integrating advanced artificial intelligence with sophisticated microfluidic systems, Beyond Blood aims to deliver laboratory-quality diagnostic results much closer to the patient, whether in clinics, community health centers, or, in the future, within the home environment, significantly improving accessibility and speed of diagnosis.

Asika: Asika is creating intelligent AI agents specifically for hospital and clinic settings. These agents are designed to automate administrative workflows, thereby reducing the burden of paperwork and driving substantial operational efficiencies within healthcare institutions, freeing up valuable human resources for patient-focused care.

CCI Photonics: CCI Photonics is developing an AI-enhanced diagnostic platform that utilizes infrared light to rapidly detect and assess infections at the point of care. This technology promises to equip clinicians with the ability to make critical treatment decisions much sooner, leading to improved patient outcomes and potentially reducing the spread of infections.

InformiX Pharma: InformiX Pharma is dedicated to assisting pharmaceutical companies in the development of superior medicines. Their approach leverages advanced 3D X-ray imaging to provide unprecedented insights into the structural intricacies of medicines, thereby supporting the design of more effective and targeted therapeutic treatments.

Pioneering Better Health Outcomes Through Collaborative Innovation

Paul Vernon, Executive Director of Business and Innovation at STFC and Head of Daresbury Laboratory, emphasized the transformative potential of the companies within the DTC Health program. "From helping stroke survivors recover mobility to developing new medicines, these pioneering companies are turning ambitious ideas into technologies that could transform healthcare and improve lives," Vernon stated.

He further elaborated on the role of the DTC Health program: "Through DTC Health, STFC is giving early-stage businesses access to the expertise, facilities and support they need to take their ideas from the lab into the real world. By backing the next generation of health technologies, we are improving patient outcomes, creating high-value jobs and strengthening the UK’s position as a global leader in deep tech innovation."

Vernon also highlighted the alignment of these efforts with national policy: "In doing so, we are supporting the Government’s Modern Industrial Strategy and helping build a more resilient, prosperous and innovation-led economy."

Daresbury Laboratory: A Leading Hub for DeepTech Growth and Economic Impact

The DTC Health incubation programme is an integral part of STFC’s broader national network of technology commercialisation initiatives, collectively known as the STFC DeepTech Catalyst. This network fosters collaboration with industry-leading partners across specialized sectors, creating a synergistic environment for innovation.

The significance of Daresbury Laboratory as a hub for growth is further underscored by its recent recognition. The campus was identified as one of the Financial Times’ "Europe’s Top SME Hubs 2026," a testament to its crucial role in nurturing small and medium-sized enterprises and driving economic development. The DTC program, as part of this ecosystem, plays a pivotal role in connecting start-ups with the essential facilities, expertise, and investment required to scale into globally competitive businesses.

Since its inception in 2011, the DeepTech Catalyst has provided crucial support to over 230 start-ups. These ventures have collectively achieved remarkable milestones, including the creation of an estimated 3,500 high-value jobs and the generation of over £2 billion in revenue. Furthermore, the program contributes approximately £125 million in gross value added (GVA) to the UK economy annually, demonstrating its substantial economic impact.
